TGS 2005: Landstalker PSPClimax returns to the role-playing game that made its name.by Nix September 16, 2005 - It's been a long time coming, but Climax is returning to its 'Stalkers series. (That would be the Japanese Climax that makes RPGs, not the European Climax that makes racing/action games, or the Climax Graphics that made Blue Stinger and then was shunned forevermore.) The company has announced a PSP game called Landstalker, and while this will remind many of the Mega-Drive game of the same name, the PSP version comes into its own with 3D visuals. The trailer shown at TGS was just a teaser for the upcoming PSP game. No gameplay was shown, only multiple fly-bys of the various locales. The game engine is done entirely in 3D now, but the play is still grid-based, making for very interesting-looking creations. Everything was blocky, including the ornate castles and mucky swamps that the game flew through, and it sort of looked like the whole game was made out of LEGOs (only without the connector dots.) Climax's kiosk had a large homemade castle and moat layout done in the same block-3D style to shown the intentional approach to the look. Some nice 16bit-style layering techniques (such as water textures) helped bring the grid to life. We'd compare it to a grid-structured take on the first Dark Cloud, and the towering castle made out of grids and blocks was certainly looking cool. We weren't able to see any of the battle sequences or main gameplay structures of this PSP game, and were not able to find out from the booth staff whether this will be a remake or a new Landstalker. The game looks to be quite a ways off, and has not been announced for America yet, but keep an eye out for more on this game.
