"The Happiest Dead Boy in the World" by Tad Williams is a good and entertaining story, which in very few pages contains everything that made OTHERLAND interesting. I don´t know if Williams has planned any more OTHERLAND stories, but he certainly has planted some interesting story seeds there. The story also includes a very nice virtual Rivendell scenario, and quite a few Tolkien jokes."Beyond Between" by Anne McCaffrey is a weak story in every respect. A sentimental Pernese ghost story full of wish fullfillment and little logic or coherent plot. I was very disappointed, because usually I like McCaffrey´s dragon stories, but this was too fluffy for me."The Messenger" by Raymond E. Feist. This proves to be a very nice wartime story. Fast paced with an interesting everyday hero. A good read, and much better than "The Wood Boy" in LEGENDS I.Robin Hobb´s "Homecoming", which is a very good story written as a diary. The narrator´s voice is unpleasant at first, but it grows on you as the narrator´s perspective changes and evolves. It´s full of atmosphere and mystery. Certainly, one of the best stories in this collection.Terry Brooks´s "Indomitable" fell absolutely flat for me. It´s a generic fantasy quest combined with a coming-of-age story compressed into about 40 pages. None of the characters came alive for me and the story itself was fairly predictable. This story might be more interesting to people who are familar with Brooks´s Shannara series, but it has absolutely failed to intigue me enough to hunt down one of his novels. It might be slightly better than McCaffrey´s contribution, but several of the other stories are much, much better than this.
