Respect!ThysMcKellen Calls on Gay Stars To Come OutIan McKellen has sharply criticized fellow gay actors who pretend to be straight off-camera as well as on-. "It is extremely sad, but no major actors are happy to say they are gay. They are doing it and cannot be happy with themselves. They are sending a dreadful message to their fans," McKellen told the Gay.com UK website. The actor, nominated for a Best Supporting Actor nomination in 2002 for his role as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and for best actor for his role as the director James Whale in Gods and Monsters in 1999, said that he had hoped that his own success as an openly gay actor would be proof that audiences are not concerned about an actor's sexual orientation. "You have studio executives, who may be openly gay, telling actors not to come out, saying they will lose jobs because of the audience," he said. "That is just bull."
